Justice League Dark #1

JLD has a ton of potential, but I can tell it’s going to take a little while for it to kick into high gear.

This first issue introduces us to the characters (a little too briefly) and gives us a reason why they need to work together, which is to handle supernatural threats the normal Justice League can’t handle. It promises to be more cerebral, and much much┬ádarker – as the name implies.

I really like the characters they’ve chosen for this new team. There’s Madame Xanadu, who is some sort of psychic or mystic. There’s Shade the Changing Man, who…I dunno…has some sort of superpowered jacket, I think. There’s John Constantine, who has no powers but is an expert on the occult. There’s Deadman, who’s a dead man. And there’s Zatanna, magician. I may not know much about these characters, but it seems like a great team-up.

The book is a little hard to follow, especially to those of us who aren’t familiar with all the characters, but the structure leads me to think that we’ll learn more about the characters as they work together and learn about each other; technically, the team isn’t even assembled yet.

Verdict: Really looking forward to more
