All-Star Western #1

I think a lot of people will overlook this book, which is unfortunate. I know it seems like a holdover from a bygone era, and it is. But DC has made it relevant again, with a very cool story with one of their most underappreciated characters: Jonah Hex.

Hex is a scarred and dour bounty hunter and former Confederate soldier, who finds his way into a relatively new, bustling city called Gotham. And as you’d expect, there’s a lot of crime and corruption already taking root. Hex is paired up with a psychologist named Amadeus Arkham – who should be familiar to Batman readers as the man who founded Arkham Asylum. There are some other cool callbacks, but I won’t spoil them here.

Hex, for those who aren’t familiar with him, doesn’t really care about anyone – or at least that’s what he wants people to think. He’s very “lawful neutral”, living by his own peculiar moral code, which fascinates Arkham. And me too.

I never saw the poorly-reviewed Jonah Hex movie, but if you did, I strongly urge you to give him another shot, and this is a great place to start.

Verdict: Definitely one of my favorites
