Blue Beetle #1

This re-introduces Jaime Reyes as Blue Beetle, which seems entirely unnecessary to me. He was introduced in his own series just five years ago, and those books were great. I know a lot of people don’t care for this new version of the 72-year-old superhero, but I was surprised by how much I wound up liking him.

I guess I can see why they reset the character like this. He was tied to the Infinite Crisis, which I’m assuming never happened in the New 52. But it feels like a waste of time to me.

That said, this book does live up to the 2006 run. It retells how Jaime found the Scarab (or vice versa) and the world he lives in is pretty much the same as it’s always been, although I’m not sure if a certain crime boss is still a crime boss here.

It also gives some nice background into the Scarab’s origins with the Reach, yet another alien race bent on universal conquest. I especially like how the book points out that the Green Lanterns are somewhat involved in the conflict too. (Although I’ve gotta wonder, who is that Lantern, and why is he in sector 2814?)

The book seems to have as much humor and character as before, which are what really appealed to me about the previous series. The art is great, and there are some interesting new(?) villains.

I still think you should go back and read the 2006 BB series, but this is a good introduction too.

Verdict: An unnecessary reboot, but a good one
