Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #1

I know what you’re thinking, because it’s the same thing I was thinking: Frankenstein? In a comic? What the hell?

I first learned of this character’s existence (in DC comics, not in literature as a whole) a few months ago. He shows up in Final Crisis on a motorcycle, and later I think he showed up in Blackest Night. I thought the concept was pretty lame, and probably a Hellboy rip-off: Frankenstein is an operative for a secret paranormal agency, and he goes around fighting stuff and investigating. Gimme a break.

However, although DC failed to catch my interest before, this new series actually looks pretty cool. It does a good job of introducing Frankenstein himself, although precious little is told of his past or how he became involved in SHADE. Is this a continuation of Mary Shelly’s monster? (Also, they DO know that Frankenstein was the doctor’s name, right? Not the monster’s name?)

We get very short introductions to the supporting cast, which is made up of Frankie’s “father”, who is now in the body of a small asian girl – there’s a story worth telling. Frankie also has a 4-armed wife that you get zero information about, and he is eventually joined by the Creature Commandos (some of them, at least) who are a long-running, lesser-known group of DC heroes (I think). In this case, there’s a werewolf, a vampire, a mummy, and a fish-woman. So basically they have the best LARP team ever.

I was also quite excited to see Ray Palmer. (Is he still The Atom? In this new timeline, was he ever┬áThe Atom?)┬áHis shrinking technology has been put to very interesting use to create SHADE’s secret headquarters, which is manned by cyborgs. If this sounds anything like Ant Man creating a secret prison for SHIELD and having it manned by Ultron robots, you’re clearly delusional.

Anyway, what’s here is surprisingly fun. The tone is very dark and violent, but the writers aren’t afraid to add some humor. The concept is clearly ridiculous, and it looks like everyone involved is having a good time.

Verdict: IT’S ALIVE!!! (sorry, couldn’t resist)
